Happy New Year! Jan 2010
Dear J,
Life Signs:
Contemporary without Compromise
Christmas List
2
Corinthians 9:15 (New International Version)
15Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
Did you have a
joyful time with family and friends last month?
Did you get what you asked for?
When you think about it, Jesus did not have a choice on what He
received. He was given three different
gifts. The first gift was gold. Everyone would probably be happy with a gift
of gold, right? Well, in the Middle
East, it is customary for a king to have plenty of gold. Next was the gift of frankincense. Frankincense was and still is rare and
difficult to come by. Of course, kings
obtained this. Nowadays, the use of
frankincense (incense) is more prominent in churches, for the most part,
Catholic churches. The incense is burned
and the smoke that emanates from it is believed to carry peoples' prayers to
Heaven. Finally, the gift of myrrh was
used for the burial of Jesus' body after crucifixion. Do you find it ironic that the gifts given at
birth were used for His death and even medicinal purposes?
Something
to Think About
What if our country (as a whole) took heed to this verse?
2 Chronicles 7:14 says,
"if My people, who are called by
My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their
wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and will
heal their land,"
It is in the Bible. Can
it be done?
PEACE IN PRAYER
Philippians
4:6-7 (New International Version)
6Do not be
anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which
transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus.
We sometimes believe we are independent, self-sufficient
people. Our tired minds, aching backs
and calloused hands that produced a successful career and a comfortable home
seems to affirm that myth. What if
corporate restructuring takes away the paycheck or terminal illness robs our
strength and vitality? Anxiety, worry,
and fear sets in, taking the place of our pride. Life comes from the Lord, and so does daily
help. We come to the Lord through
prayers, and the fruit of prayer is peace. Yet prayer is not a mantra, and we cannot use
it to try to manipulate God. Prayer is a
divine gift to strengthen the bonds of love between God and us. The act of prayer itself affirms our
dependence on Him for peace and joy.
Peace is knowing that death is overcome by His resurrection, falsehood
by His truth, confusion by His wisdom, hatred by His love. This is the joyful fruit of believers who
seek the Lord! Then, when all else has
failed, we can still say "I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God
my Savior (Habakkuk 3:18)."
